Advancing the Sport Innovation Ecosystem: Collective Insights from the STRN Sports Innovation Exchange

In early 2026, the STRN published The Current State of the Sport Innovation Ecosystem, establishing a global framework for how research, industry, and elite sport interact. But the real question remained: How do these theories resonate with the people driving innovation every day?

To find out, we convened global leaders for the STRN Sports Innovation Exchange in New York City (June 29th, 2026). This blog summarizes the collective intelligence gathered from those intense roundtable discussions, now published in our latest follow-up paper: Advancing the Sport Innovation Ecosystem.

Moving Beyond the "New"

One of the most striking takeaways from the NYC Exchange was a challenge to the definition of innovation itself. Participants consistently described innovation as creating meaningful value rather than simply introducing novelty. This shift in perspective moved our focus toward five core ecosystem insights:

  • Problem-First, Technology-Second: Successful innovation begins with a clearly defined problem. Engaging end-users early ensures that tech solves actual operational needs rather than assumed ones.
  • Decision-Led Evidence: Validation is not a "one-size-fits-all" checkmark. Evidence must be tailored to the technology’s intended use, its level of risk, and its practical application environment.
  • Building Capability for Adoption: Developing great tech is only half the battle. Success depends on "organizational readiness"—infrastructure, scientific literacy, and leadership that supports behavior change.
  • Partnerships as Learning Engines: Effective collaboration isn't just about individual projects; it’s about creating long-term capacity. Shared language and curiosity are the keys to bridging the gap between academia and industry.
  • Radical Transparency: Trust is a shared ecosystem asset. Credibility is built through scientific rigor and the honesty to say when a technology is not the right solution for a specific problem.

The Path Ahead

Strengthening our ecosystem depends on developing capabilities that improve decision-making at every stage. We invite you to read the full report and join us in putting these insights into practice.
